Science, industry and commercial interests came together in ^C1, where civic leaders demonstrated what has officially been named a "highway". At first glance, the new concept seems little more than parallel roads glued next to each other. ^C1 State Civil Engineer John Mathusan explains the difference. "On a road, anyone can build a driveway or cow-crossing or what-all. All these things require traffic lights, stop signs, and cross-walks. A highway has special lanes for entrance and exit. No stop signs or traffic lights. It's possible to drive from one end of the state to the other without stopping."

When asked what effect this might have on the future of traffic, Mr. Mathusan was up-beat. "The highway will eliminate traffic jams and make driving to work much easier. And since people can drive more easily, it might even eliminate the telephone."
